Leukemoid reaction

A change in the leukogram, often in response to an infectious agent, that can mimic true leukemia closely. The changes include elevation of the absolute number of leukocytes of a specific lineage, sometimes to an extreme degree, together with an increased number of circulating immature forms in that same series.
