Alpha fetoprotein is a glycoprotein with a molecular weight of 70,000 Daltons and a half-life of 4-6 days. Although present in fetal serum in high levels, beyond the age of I year it is present only in trace amounts. This is a useful marker for yolk sac tumors and hepatomas.
