Atretic follicles are in the process of being reabsorbed by the ovary. The absence of an oocyte in some of the follicles is due to the plane of the section. In addition, the zona pellucida has been retained, but may appear collapsed. The cellular integrity of the stratum granulosum also tends to be disrupted as the granulosa/follicular cells degenerate and are replaced by connective tissue stroma.
