The parotid gland is composed entirely of serous acini and their ducts. These acinar cells stain much darker and have round, centrally located nuclei in contrast to the mucous-secreting acinar cells which stain lightly and have flattened nuclei along their basal surface. In addition, the acinar lumen in serous-secreting acini are very small and difficult to identify in some sections.
