Previously had been used synonymously with UIP (usual interstitial pneumonitis); this concept has now been changed (note this difference from your book). UIP has a chronic slowly progresive clinical course; whereas Hamman Rich Syndrome is an acute rapidly progressive fulminant disease. Hamman Rich Syndrome is an acute interstitial pneumonia (AIP) and these two terms are used interchangeably (also see AIP definition).
