The sudden breaking of bone, usually due to an externally applied force. - Simple: closed
- Comminuted: bone is splintered or crushed
- Impacted: one fragment is firmly driven into the other
- Incomplete: continuity of bone not entirely destroyed
- Greenstick: one side of bone is broken, the other being bent
- Stress: fine hairline fracture without soft tissue injury
- Compound: open
- Pathologic: due to weakening of bone by some pathologic process, e.g.,neoplasia, osteomalacia, or osteomyelitis
