Enterobacteriaciae

Organisms that have the following characteristics: Gram negative rods; ferment lactose (or perhaps additional sugars); cytochrome oxidase negative; reduce nitrate to nitrite. The Enterobacteriaciae include most of the common Gram-negative rods, such as Eschericia coli, Proteus spp., Enterobacter spp., Klebsiella pneumoniae, and the enteric pathogens Shigella and Salmonellae.
