carcinoma of the prostate
Chapter: 17
A malignant tumor of the prostate, histologically classified as adenocarcinoma. It usually originates in the peripheral lobe of the prostate and therefore can be palpated on digital rectal examination (DRE) as an induration of the prostate. Prostate cancer is a disease of old age. It is the most prevalent malignant tumor of males but in most instances it is asymptomatic and localized to the prostate (latent carcinoma). The highest incidence has been reported among American blacks. Tumors spread locally, metastasize to pelvic Iymph nodes and distant sites, most notably vertebral bones.
