The regular intake of a quantity of ethyl alcohol that is enough to injure a person socially, psychologically, or physically. The chronic abuse of alcohol may result in hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, pancreatitis, cardiomyopathy, acute rhabdomyolysis, testicular atrophy, reflux, esophagitis, peptic ulcers, mallory-weiss syndrome, and nutritional deficiency-related disorders (megaloblastic anemia, wernicke encephalopathy, korsakoff psychosis, cerebellar degeneration, central pontine myelinolysis, and polyneuropathy).
