Cysticercus, scolex, photomicrograph The cysticercus of Taenia solium is commonly called Cysticercus cellulosae. It is an encysted form of Taenia solium, acquired by ingestion of the eggs of T. solium. It occurs worldwide, and is common in Central America. It is the most common cause of seizures in immigrants from Central America. The scolex has four suckers and a rostrum of hooklets. Diagnosis depends upon recovery of an intact cyst, or in demonstration of the organism in tissue (most often brain) biopsy, as seen here.
