The RPR is a non-treponemal test for syphilis that relies upon cardiolipin antibody. It is very sensitive, but not very specific. Biologic false positives are common, especially in those patients that have a rheumatologic disorder. A positive RPR should be confirmed with one of the treponemal tests for syphilis, such as the fluorescent treponema antibody absorption test (FTA ABS).
