CT scan, mastoiditis due to S. pneumoniae

This patient presented with pneumococcal meningitis. A CT scan disclosed mastoiditis, demonstrated here by the fluid density in the mastoid air space. It should have air density, like the opposite side (arrow). The pneumococcus gained access to this patient's CSF via direct extension.
