Koilocytosis

The HPV inclusions appear as pyknotic, shrunken nuclei with a clear halo around it (koilocytosis). In situ DNA hybridization can be used to subtype the HPV, in order to identify pre-cancerous lesions due to HPV 16, 18, 31, 33, and 35. This is not done very often clinically, because close followup is required for dysplasia no matter what subtype of HPV is involved.
