In severe atherosclerosis, plaques will occasionally break off and embolize throughout the arterial system. This may cause focal ischemia, especially in the gut, where GI bleeding may occur without any evidence of ulceration. Usually, this occurs only in the case of severe aortic atherosclerosis, as in this case.
