The involved gland often has a tan appearance, rather than the normal red-brown. That is because of the virtual replacement of normal thyroid tissue by a lymphoid infiltrate, giving the gland the look of a hyperplastic lymph node. The gland may appear swollen initially, but late in the disease fibrosis and atropy occur.
