Acute GVH reaction

This photomicrograph of skin from a patient with acute GVH shows typical degeneration of the basal layer. Keratinocytes rapidly die from the inflammatory response, forming eosinophilic bodies (arrow). The histologic appearance is indistinguishable from the rash of systemic lupus erythematosis, which makes perfect sense, because both diseases are auto-immune in origin (Copyright, University of Utah, 1996).
