Cirrhosis, micronodular

The trichrome stain will make collagen appear blue. Fibrosis is evident surrounded nodules of hepatocytes. Within the fibrotic areas, there are large numbers of bile ducts and chronic inflammatory cells. The bile ducts proliferate in response to injury, presumably to try to drain the bile from the islands of hepatocytes created by regeneration. In chronic injury, the extracellular matrix is destroyed, making it impossible for the liver to regenerate properly. Cirrhosis is the end result of the altered repair process.
