Chronic active hepatitis is usually due to Hepatitis B or Hepatitis C virus. This type of scarring is known as post-necrotic cirrhosis. It is sometimes called macronodular cirrhosis, to differentiate it from alcoholic cirrhosis (fine nodular cirrhosis). However, the small nodules of alcoholic cirrhosis may coelesce to form larger ones, so the difference is really academic.
