Acute myelogenous leukemia, without maturation, peripheral blood

The CBC showed a WBC count of 48,000/ul, hemoglobin 8 gm/dl and platelet count of 25,000/ul. The white blood cells were nearly all blasts, which are medium in size, with agranular cytoplasm, and fine chromatin with prominent nucleoli. Special stains showed focal positivity for myeloperoxidase, confirming myeloid lineage. This slide shows 4 myeloblasts. Note the lack of platelets.
