The proximal convoluted tubules are lined by the "brush-border" cells, which have tremendous resorptive capacity. They are also exquisitely sensitive to oxygen deprivation and toxic injury, due to their complicated metabolic tasks. The distal tubules, nearer the medulla, by contrast have a low cuboidal epithelium.
