The photograph shows part of the lower esophagus and part of the cardia of the stomach. The squamous epithelium of the esophagus has been partially replaced by glandular epithelium which, on gross examination, appears similar to the glandular epithelium of the stomach. In the mid-portion of this glandular zone, there is an ulcerated partially exophytic tumor mass corresponding to an adenocarcinoma arising in Barrett esophagus.
