Bronchioloalveolar carcinoma, gross appearance. Bronchiolo alveolar carcinomas may have two possible growth patterns: 1) a solitary mass-like lesion or 2) a multicentric or diffuse type of growth pattern. This slide demonstrates the multicentric or diffuse growth pattern where the tumor is barely discernible as ill-defined small whitish slightly firm nodules or infiltrates. This tumor may grossly and radiographically resemble a pneumonic infiltrate, and thus clinically and radiographically may be misdiagnosed as pneumonia rather than tumor.
