Pulmonary infarcts

The deep red wedge shaped firm area represents a pulmonary infarct, which is the result of a pulmonary embolus. Infarcts are pyramidal in shape, with the base of the pyramid on the pleural surface. Because of the dual blood supply to the lung, most small pulmonary emboli do not produce infarcts.
