Atelectasis

Atelectasis refers to either incomplete expansion of the lungs or to the collapse of previously inflated lungs, producing areas of relatively airless pulmonary parenchyma. Significant atelectasis reduces oxygenation and predisposes to infection. This slide shows atelectasis in an infant lung.
