The dense layer of small dark blue cells seen here below the ependyma of the lateral ventricle is the germinal matrix. This area contains cells that will migrate to populate the developing brain. This area is most prominent from 22 to 30 weeks gestation. Hemorrhages can readily develop in this area in premature babies.
